Electronic Cigarettes

Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, are devices often designed to look similar to cigarettes, but do not contain tobacco and therefore deliver nicotine vapour instead of tobacco smoke. The nicotine vapour inhaler devices are not subject regulation, and fears are growing that people could be subjected to 'unclean' and 'unsafe' products.

E-cigs are not regulated by Tobacco Product Regulations, they are also not classed as medical devices so cannot be regulated in the same way as other nicotine replacement products.

The Department of Health recommends that smokers quit with a Stop Smoking Service as smokers who access their local Stop Smoking Service:

  • Receive face to face support
  • Have access to licensed stop smoking medicines on prescription
  • Are four times more likely to quit
